How do you determine that there is leakage in your bathroom?

If your bathroom has leakage, then it is not that hard to find. You will find stains at the entries of your bathroom door. Also, take a close look at the walls that lie at the back of the shower. You might find mould growth. Also, if your bathroom is on the upper floor, then don’t neglect the chipping paint on the ceilings and walls of the lower floor.

What is waterproofing?

Waterproofing is a method that you use to prevent water from penetrating your house. It reduces the absorption of water/moisture, thereby protecting the walls of your house from damage. People mainly use waterproofing for their bathrooms, toilet, laundries, and spa walls.

What is a primer, and is it an essential part of waterproofing?

Yes, it is. Primer is a liquid that is either made up of latex, epoxy, or polyurethane. It forms the base for the surface for waterproofing. The first and foremost task is to keep the dust and contaminants sealed. After that, it targets the porosity level of the surface and reduces it to a minimum. It even stops the excessive moisture from reaching the membrane that may cause blistering, leading to failure of waterproofing.

Is it possible to perform waterproofing in the basement?

Yes, the waterproofing technique also works for the basement. Basements are below ground level, so they are at a higher risk of water leakage. With waterproofing, you can ensure a healthier living atmosphere in your basement. Also, you can prevent damage to your belongings that are kept in the basement.

Will rendering a wall work as waterproofing?

No, it won’t work that way. The rendered coatings on solid walls work just like raincoats on our bodies. It has to be 100 per cent intact. If there is the slightest leakage in the rendered coating, water will penetrate it.

Can you explain liquid rubber waterproofing?

Liquid rubber is a self-levelling form of the liquid rubber waterproofing membrane. It will cure just as tough as the truck tire. Still, the membrane is permanently flexible. You can apply it at any thickness. It can cure throughout its volume at a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in about 4 hours.

What type of surface do you need for applying liquid rubber?

For best results, you have to make sure that there is no oil, dust, varnish, or flaky particles on the surface. Even if there is paint, it must be adequately bonded on the surface. If everything seems as per requirement, you brush or roll the surface with liquid rubber. It can adhere to any type of substrate provided the material is not oil-based.

How would you define a bituminous waterproofing membrane?

Bitumen is a sticky and highly viscous black coloured liquid that is even available in semi-solid form. It comes with waterproofing qualities. After modifying bitumen with polymer-based plastics, a bituminous waterproofing membrane is formed. Usually, they are applied 2 to 4 mm thick and flexible enough to cover small cracks.

Do warm weather conditions have any impact on the bituminous membrane?

No, the bituminous membrane won’t melt away in warm temperature. The temperature needs to be high, and our climatic temperature doesn’t reach that level. Even if the climatic temperature increases very much, it will only make the membrane soft. The structural integrity is not compromised at any cost.

How would you define efflorescence?

Efflorescence is a white flaky substance we see on the walls. When water infiltrates the walls, Calcium Hydroxide salt present in the cement, surfaces. On surfacing, it reacts with carbon-di-oxide of air. On reaction, it forms a flaky white powder, Calcium Carbonate. This is what we recognise as efflorescence. Efflorescence must be taken seriously as it can weaken the structure of our building.

What type of building installation problems leads to efflorescence?

There are multiple problems like a joint material failure, use of materials without ventilation, no proper ground storage, and more. In various instances, masonry units are left overnight without covering that leads to the absorption of moisture. It increases the risk of efflorescence throughout the construction project.

How can I differentiate between discolouration and efflorescence?

For this, you need to sprinkle water on the surface of the wall. Efflorescence will disappear the time wall surface becomes wet. You will see the vivid colours coming back to visibility. As soon as the wall dries out, efflorescence will again become visible on the walls. It is more prominently visible on dark surfaces.

Is there a variation available in pool tiles?

Yes, pool tiles are of multiple types. You will find them in brick, mosaic, ceramic, porcelain, and stone forms. People usually choose a tile-based on its colour, price, size, and other preferences. To avoid a slippery surface, people also tend to buy textured tiles as compared to smooth tiles.

Can I use the regular tile as a pool tile?

No, pool tiles are entirely different from regular tiles. They are manufactured to withstand the change in temperature, exposure to sunlight, aquatic surrounding, and contact with chemicals. On the other hand, regular household tiles cannot withstand outdoor usage. Hence, they are not durable outside.

Which type of tile should I buy for swimming pools?

You can buy either porcelain or ceramic tiles for swimming pools. They have been serving as best pool tiles for almost a decade. From being simple to install and clean, any design can be hand-painted on the ceramic pool tiles. Kids won’t suffer from accidental bruises as the surface is smooth to touch. Porcelain tiles offer an advantage with its low heat absorption property. All in all both the tiles are perfect for swimming pools.

What are the advantages associated with glass tiles in the swimming pool?

Glass tiles have over time become famous. Nothing is better than glass to complement the water’s transparent property. They are non-permeable meaning water-resistant. From heat and fire to ultraviolet rays, these tiles can withstand anything. With being low-maintenance, these tiles will last you a long lifespan. If we look at the style and colour, then glass tiles are majorly available in dark colours. This gives your pool an impression of good depth. You can use them for hot as well as cold pools.

How to differentiate between ceramic and porcelain tiles?

Ceramic tiles are the ones made by pressing and then firing a combination of clay and sand. Once the enamel is applied, the tile undergoes repeated firing. These are mainly used for wall cladding and has less strength. Porcelain tiles, on the other hand, are made with a mixture of silica sand, minerals, and clay. There are colouring pigments in it that are spread throughout the thickness of porcelain stoneware.  Porcelain tiles are much more durable than ceramic tiles.

How does the whole process of mounting pool tiles happen?

Begin by eliminating contaminants from the surface of the pool like dust, oil, laitance, and efflorescence.  After that, look for painted surfaces and remove all of the paint. If you are just starting with a new pool, then wait for six weeks for the concrete shell to dry out completely. You will have to apply primer after that. In case, you are tiling over cementitious rendering then you will have to let it cure for about three weeks. Next, adhere the tiles to walls by using adhesive.

Which one comes with better durability- Ceramic or Porcelain?

Durability has to be one of the main differences in ceramic and porcelain tiles. There is no doubt that porcelain tiles come with a smooth surface and are more robust than ceramic ones. Ceramic tiles owing to their manufacturing process are less durable and suitable for partitions, residential flooring, etc. But porcelain is very durable and can be used almost anywhere. Be it industrial, commercial, or residential.

Can you define rectified tiles?

Yes, rectified tile is a fired tile that has been cut mechanically to fit an exact size. These tiles are only mounted to the tile’s edges. That’s why it is called edge treatment. The edges are cut precisely into a square with an angle of 90-degree. So once mounted, it creates a look of a single tile on the whole wall. It doesn’t require much grout filling too.

What type of variety is available in tiles in the market?

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are one of the most popular ones in the market. You can also find some of the stone varieties like bluestone, marble, limestone, and travertine. Other varieties that you will find in the market include cement tiles, glass tiles, metal tiles, and resin tiles.

Is it possible to mount tiles in the fireplace?

No, it is not possible, and we don’t recommend doing so. There are porcelain tiles that are heat resistant, but they can only stand temperature up to 80 degrees Celsius. That’s why it isn’t a good idea to put tiles inside the fireplace. However, you can put tiles for the hearth and place surrounding the fireplace. The surrounding tiles do give an extravagant look to the fireplace.

How do you define a tile adhesive?

A tile adhesive is used to fix tiles or adhere to tiles. It is available in two different versions. One is the cemented one, and the other is a premixed paste. It depends on a variety of factors to decide the type of adhesive you need—for example, the type of tiles- ceramic or porcelain—next, the surface area, humidity level, temperature, the type of substrate, and more.

What’s the impact of low humidity on tile adhesive?

Low humidity majorly impacts the effect of tile adhesive. The water in the adhesive evaporates faster in such climatic conditions. This, in turn, does not allow the cement to form strong bonds. Without strong bonds, it is evident that tiling will only last for a few years.

How do you define additive?

Additives are added to enhance the performance of grout or adhesive. The effects depend on the type of additive or the purpose of using it. It can increase resistance to stains, water, and even chemical reaction. With other additives, you can increase even flexural strength and bond strength.

Does replacing the tile shower costs a lot?

If you are going to replace a tile shower, then it is going to be a costly affair for you. As first you need to do waterproofing treatment on the area before adding tiles to it. After waterproofing again you need some sort of levelling. Thus, make sure the whole process is carried out cautiously by following the Australian standards for the first time itself.

Is bathroom renovation and remodelling the same?

No, bathroom renovation and remodelling differ depending on the scale of changes. Renovation is usually done on a smaller scale. For example, you replace your bathroom’s tiles or faucets. Remodelling, on the other hand, is done on a larger scale. Here, you make changes to almost everything in your bathroom.

What kind of preparation do I need to do before the bathroom renovation?

The first and foremost thing is to go through various décor related magazines and websites. You can even opt for TV shows that showcase good designs. All this is going to give you an idea about your dream look of your bathroom. You can even grab some ideas and mix and match them to give them your style.
